On top of that, it is key to limit centrifugal acceleration in other words limit the vehicle’s speed as it turns.ħ. ![]() The goal is to define the forward and backward acceleration and deceleration, especially in the case of an emergency stop. To ensure this does not happen, acceleration and deceleration parameters must be carefully tuned and then tested heavily with the real vehicle during commissioning (installation). How can I guarantee an AGV will not tip over when carrying its payload? They are typically mounted approximately 15 cm (6 in) above the ground in order to maximize visibility along the vehicle’s routes.Ħ. In order to respect the safety standards, safety scanners must be mounted at a maximum distance of 20 cm (8 in) from the floor. Where do I need to mount the AGV’s safety laser scanners? In fact, to support vehicle makers during this process, BlueBotics created a Safety Support Package, which allows vehicle makers to benefit from our company’s experience and knowledge in programming safety controllers.ĥ. This is a critical part of the process when a vehicle maker is automating a new vehicle. Safety systems require solid programming skills and in-depth knowledge of both the AGV and the safety system being used. Many companies use different scanners for different jobs – adding for example a scanner high up on the vehicle to handle localization (positioning), and ankle-height scanners to ensure the safety of the vehicle.Įnsuring a vehicle is safe can be complicated and the work required to achieve this is often underestimated. When it comes to 2D safety laser scanners, the only mandatory requirement to ensure the safety of workers is a horizonal scanner positioned to detect obstacles near the floor (since humans cannot fly). For any vehicle that is not moving at a low speed, this means the vehicle will need greater dimensions and therefore more space will be required for it to maneuver. The clearest evidence of this concerns the size of the bumper itself, which, in order to guarantee stopping before hitting the hard surface of the vehicle, has to be proportional to the maximum speed the vehicle can reach. However, 2D safety sensors are better adapted – more intelligent – than bumpers. An alternative is to use mechanical components such as bumpers. Are 2D safety laser scanners mandatory for AGVs? A loss of safety function can still occur in the case of a synchronous accumulation of faults, which is however highly unlikely.ģ. Specifically, this level of safety ensures a vehicle continues to function in the event of a single fault, for example by employing two redundant channels. The industry standard AGV manufacturers are required to reach is PLd level safety programming. The EN ISO 13849-2015 standard defines the performance levels (PLa to PLe) required for different safety components. How can I know which safety level an AGV is certified to? In the US, there is a very similar standard, the ANSI B56.5-2019: Safety standard for driverless, automatic guided industrial vehicles and automated functions of manned industrial vehicles.Ģ. This standard not only covers the vehicle and its systems, but also applies to the commissioning of such vehicles and the preparation of the environments in which they will be used. In Europe, the ISO 3691-4:2020: Industrial trucks - Safety requirements and verification - Part 4: “Driverless industrial trucks and their systems” specifies safety requirements - and the means of verifying these - for industrial AGVs. So, to clarify how it works, let’s dig into the seven questions we get asked the most: We also receive questions on this topic from potential buyers of our customers’ ANT® driven vehicles. When we at BlueBotics partner with such companies, safety is almost always a topic of discussion. ![]() Safety systems are therefore a critical part of the development puzzle for vehicle manufacturers. Although automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are, by definition, designed to run autonomously, they do still usually need to work alongside people and therefore move, and react, in a safe, predictable manner. ![]()
